Attorney Profiles > Mereda Davis Johnson, Partner

Attorney Mereda Davis Johnson has practiced law for over 25 years concentrating in the areas of family law, domestic relations and real estate closings. In forming the Burroughs Johnson Hopewell partnership in July 2007, Attorney Johnson brings the resources developed during a successful partnership of more than two decades with her husband Congressman Hank Johnson, who was elected in 2006 to the U.S House of Representatives representing Georgia’s 4th Congressional District.

In partnership with her husband, Attorney Johnson served as the managing partner with Johnson & Johnson Law Group, LLC, and saw the firm double in size in recent years. At the same time she established a well-deserved reputation as one of the premiere family law practitioners in the Atlanta metropolitan area. A fierce advocate, she has obtained numerous substantial verdicts and favorable settlements on behalf of her clients. On the appellate level she has set precedents in such cases as Brown vs. Brown and the landmark case of Marve vs. Families First, a decision which delineated the adoption surrender laws.

Attorney Johnson began her career as a lawyer after earning her Juris Doctorate from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. By appointment in 1985, she became the first African American female judge in DeKalb County, Georgia. At the time of her historic appointment, Attorney Johnson had been practicing law for less than three years.

Attorney Johnson is co-founder and past president of the DeKalb Lawyers Association in which she continues to be an active volunteer. Her efforts throughout the years have contributed to the phenomenal growth in the membership of the association, which now boasts over 125 members. She is also the founder of ARThink DeKalb, Inc. and a past Board Member of South DeKalb Center for the Arts.

Attorney Johnson is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, past member and vice president of the Board of Directors of the Georgia Legal Services Corporation, a member of the Rainbow/Push Peachtree Street Project, and a member of the State Bar of Georgia BASIC’s Committee.

In January 2007, Attorney Johnson was appointed to the DeKalb County Hospital Authority by DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Crossroads News Foundation. She has volunteered her time serving as legal counsel for the Decatur Cooperative Ministry, which provides housing, and food for homeless women and children.

Attorney Johnson is a member of Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in downtown Decatur, Georgia. She is married to Congressman Hank Johnson, and they have two children, Randi and Alex.
